Making Designers exhibition will show the school work of well-known design stars, to inspire tomorrow’s generation of industry leaders.
Before they were stars of their industry, top designers like Nigel Coates, Michael Marriott, Linda Morey-Smith and Matthew Hilton were curious school students exploring the DT workshops. The foundations of their careers were made there, among the dusty band saws, and the models they knocked up have come to represent their first steps down successful career paths.
For our upcoming exhibition, Making Designers – in collaboration with On Office magazine – those models will be unearthed and brought to Clerkenwell Design Week, in a show that hopes to inspire young designers to keep designing with their hands. Alongside the aforementioned big names, Tom Lloyd, Simon Pengelly, Ab Rogers, Gala Wright, Anna Hart, Mark Gabbertas and Terence Woodgate have also agreed to take part.
John Miller, founder of MARK, came up with the idea for the show when reforms in educational policy posed a huge threat on design and art learning. Thankfully, education secretary Michael Gove took a U-turn on the EBacc scheme, but there is still a steady decline on ‘making’ as a key skill.
School workshops lack funding, while most design students learn how to build in CAD without much contact with real materials and machines. By exhibiting the earliest work of design industry leaders, Miller and onoffice hope the Making Designers show will boost the importance of making in the eyes of those leading educational policy, as well as the next generation of designers.
The show will take place during Clerkenwell Design Week from 21-23 May, at the Scin Gallery, EC1, with more names to be added soon.
