A new product with a story
In 2012, Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama, developed a series of furniture utilising wasted and discarded chairs found in the streets. The chairs
were stripped down to their bare frames, re-welded, and powder coated in bright colours. Combining these frames to generously padded
seats and backs they became the ‘re-imagine’ collection. The pieces were exhibited at the 19 Greek Street Gallery, and went on to feature in collaborations with Marc Jacobs and David David. They were nominated for Design of the Year at the Design Museum in 2012.
‘This was a project born out of questioning our resourcefulness and our attitudes towards waste.’ explains Nina Tolstrup; ‘It builds on our studio’s interests in expediency and re-using the existing, and speaks of our ability to see the potential in the overlooked and unloved’
In 2017 MARK Product became involved as a manufacturing partner to produce a set of dining chairs for London’s new Mandrake Hotel
designed by Manalo and White. MARK’s designers Anna Hart and John Miller were impressed: ‘ We loved the character and practicality of the collection and saw the potential of the range within our contract interiors market.’ Explains Anna Hart. ‘We’ve enjoyed working with
Studiomama to develop the range further, adjusting the scale and details of the product to suit the contemporary interior.’ Tables have
also been added, all based on the distinctive ‘loop’ shape.
The launch range comprises lounge furniture – chairs, sofas, armchairs and coffee tables; as well as a range of dining furniture – benches, stools and tables. These are suited to a wide variety of interior
applications and with a range of fabric and finish options.
The name ‘Loops’ references both the signature shape of the product and the cyclical story behind it: From a new product to an old product, to rubbish, to a re-imagined form: In 2018 Loops is reimagined as a new product once more.
